Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ulipristal acetate + etonogestrel is a contraceptive drug combination being evaluated for 'quick-start' initiation of long-term contraception. Ulipristal acetate is a selective progesterone receptor modulator (SPRM) used as an emergency contraceptive to delay or inhibit ovulation. Etonogestrel is a progestin agonist delivered via a long-acting subcutaneous implant (Nexplanon) that suppresses ovulation and thickens cervical mucus. The University of Utah is conducting clinical research to determine if the same-day administration of oral ulipristal acetate and the insertion of an etonogestrel implant is effective and safe, addressing the clinical concern that the progestin in the implant might interfere with the anti-progestogenic effect of ulipristal acetate.
