Overview

Ulmus crassifolia pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Cedar Elm tree (Ulmus crassifolia). It is a biologic product used for diagnostic purposes, specifically for percutaneous (prick/scratch) or intradermal skin testing. [4, 6] The extract helps to diagnose Type I hypersensitivity (allergy) to cedar elm pollen in individuals showing allergic symptoms. [7, 13] The mechanism involves the allergen in the extract binding to and cross-linking IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells in the skin of a sensitized person. This action triggers the degranulation of mast cells and the release of histamine and other chemical mediators, which produces a characteristic wheal and erythema (flare) reaction, confirming sensitivity to the allergen. [1, 14] This product is categorized as a non-standardized allergenic extract and is developed and distributed by companies such as ALK-Abello, Inc. [5, 6, 9]
