Ulmus rubra pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the *Ulmus rubra* (slippery elm) tree. It is primarily utilized as a diagnostic tool in clinical allergy testing, such as skin prick tests or intradermal tests, to identify individuals with hypersensitivity to elm tree pollen. The extract contains various proteins and glycoproteins that act as allergens; when introduced to the skin of a sensitized individual, these allergens cross-link specific IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells and basophils. This interaction triggers the degranulation of these cells and the subsequent release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators, resulting in a visible wheal-and-flare reaction. In addition to its diagnostic use, the extract may be employed in allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT) to induce immunological tolerance in patients suffering from allergic rhinitis or asthma triggered by elm pollen.
