Overview

Ultra-high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (UHMW-HA) is a high-viscosity formulation of sodium hyaluronate, a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in synovial fluid and the extracellular matrix. It is utilized as a viscosupplementation agent to restore the rheological properties of the synovial environment, providing mechanical lubrication and anti-inflammatory effects. The drug is primarily investigated for musculoskeletal conditions, such as subdeltoid (subacromial) bursitis, where it is administered via ultrasound-guided injection to reduce pain and improve joint function. Its biological activity is mediated through binding to the CD44 receptor, which modulates inflammatory signaling and stabilizes the extracellular matrix. In clinical research, it has been evaluated in Phase 4 trials led by Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital to compare its efficacy against high molecular weight formulations.
