Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ultracet ER is an extended-release fixed-dose combination of tramadol hydrochloride, a centrally acting atypical opioid analgesic, and acetaminophen (paracetamol), a non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic. Developed by Janssen, this formulation is designed to provide both rapid and prolonged pain relief with improved patient compliance compared to immediate-release formulations. Tramadol exerts its analgesic effects by binding to mu-opioid receptors and weakly inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, while acetaminophen acts primarily in the central nervous system to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Ultracet ER is indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain, including chronic low back pain, osteoarthritis pain, and postoperative pain.
