Overview

Ulva lactuca aqueous extract is a water-based extract from the green seaweed Ulva lactuca (commonly known as sea lettuce). It contains multiple bioactive secondary metabolites including saponins, triterpenoids, steroids, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and polysaccharides. Preclinical studies have shown that this extract promotes antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, enhances fibroblast proliferation, and accelerates wound healing both in vitro and in vivo. The extract has demonstrated the ability to inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IFN-γ) and upregulate anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β1). Additionally, it has exhibited anti-cholinesterase (AChE, BChE inhibition), cytotoxic (anti-cancer), and antiviral (notably anti-SARS-CoV-2) activities in preclinical models. Key components include caffeic acid, quercetin, and polysaccharides, supporting its potential use in wound healing, oxidative stress reduction, anti-inflammatory therapies, neuroprotective strategies, and antiviral interventions[1][2][3].
