Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP), also known as ulvan, is a sulfated heteropolysaccharide extracted from the green macroalga *Ulva lactuca* (commonly known as sea lettuce). It is composed of rhamnose, xylose, glucose, galactose, and uronic acid, with significant sulfate ester groups. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that ULP possesses diverse biological activities, including immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. In models of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), ULP has been shown to suppress tumor growth by restructuring the gut microbiota, altering serum lipid metabolites (such as increasing lysophosphatidylserine and decreasing lysophosphatidic acid), inducing CD5L expression, and activating the complement cascade. It is also investigated for its potential in alleviating constipation and oxidative stress-induced renal injury.
