Overview

Umbilical cord artery-derived perivascular stem cells (UCA-PSCs) are a specialized population of mesenchymal-like stem cells isolated from the perivascular niche (the area surrounding the blood vessels) of the human umbilical cord artery. These cells are characterized by their high proliferative capacity, multi-lineage differentiation potential, and potent paracrine activity. In the context of regenerative medicine, particularly for Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI), UCA-PSCs are employed to stimulate angiogenesis and tissue repair. They function primarily by secreting a suite of pro-angiogenic and cytoprotective factors—including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)—which promote the formation of new capillary networks and improve blood perfusion in ischemic tissues. Additionally, they exhibit immunomodulatory properties that help mitigate inflammatory damage in the clinical target area.
