This combination therapy, investigated by Bundang CHA Hospital (CHA Bundang Medical Center), consists of allogeneic umbilical cord blood (UCB) cells and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) for the treatment of subacute stroke. The therapeutic approach combines the regenerative potential of UCB-derived stem and progenitor cells with the neuroprotective and neurotrophic properties of rhEPO. The UCB component is administered as a single intravenous infusion, while rhEPO is administered in multiple doses (up to five) intravenously or subcutaneously. The combination is hypothesized to exert synergistic effects on neurological recovery by promoting angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and anti-inflammatory responses in the brain tissue affected by stroke. The erythropoietin used in clinical trials was supplied by Daewoong Pharmaceutical, and the cord blood was sourced from the CHA Cord Blood Bank.
