Overview

Umbilical cord blood-derived anti-BCMA CAR T cells is an investigational allogeneic chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy being developed by Shaanxi People's Hospital for the treatment of relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. This therapy utilizes T cells harvested from allogeneic umbilical cord blood (UCB), which are genetically engineered to express a CAR targeting B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), a protein highly expressed on the surface of malignant plasma cells. The use of UCB as a cell source offers a potential "off-the-shelf" alternative to autologous CAR-T therapies, potentially reducing the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) due to the immunological immaturity of neonatal T cells. The therapy is designed to selectively bind to and eliminate BCMA-positive myeloma cells through T-cell mediated cytotoxicity.
