Overview

This experimental cell-free biologic therapy consists of microvesicles (exosomes) derived from umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSCs). Developed by the General Committee of Teaching Hospitals and Institutes in Egypt, specifically at Sahel Teaching Hospital, it is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT02138331) for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. The therapy is designed to reduce the autoimmune-mediated inflammatory state that destroys pancreatic islet beta cells. By delivering these immunomodulatory vesicles via intravenous infusion, the treatment aims to improve beta-cell mass and function, thereby enhancing glycemic control in patients. It represents a novel approach in regenerative medicine, moving away from whole-cell stem cell transplantation to a cell-free extracellular vesicle modality.
