Overview

Umbilical cord blood-derived platelet gel is a biologic therapy developed by the Royan Institute for the treatment of chronic wounds, specifically diabetic foot ulcers. It is produced by concentrating platelets from allogeneic umbilical cord blood and inducing the release of a supraphysiological concentration of growth factors and cytokines stored within platelet alpha granules, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). When applied topically to the ulcer site, the gel provides a regenerative environment that promotes cell migration, proliferation, and angiogenesis, thereby accelerating the wound-healing process. This therapy serves as an alternative to autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP), overcoming limitations such as the need for repeated blood collections from patients with comorbidities.
