Overview

Umbilical cord blood-derived regulatory T cells (Second Xiangya Hospital) is an investigational adoptive cell therapy being developed by the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus. The therapy involves the ex vivo expansion of allogeneic regulatory T cells (Tregs) isolated from umbilical cord blood. These cells are cultured and expanded using human recombinant IL-2 and rapamycin, and restimulated with CD3/CD28 dynabeads to ensure phenotypic stability and suppressive potency. The primary mechanism of action is the restoration of immune tolerance by suppressing the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic islet beta cells, thereby preserving residual insulin production. Clinical evaluation has progressed to Phase 1/2 trials in patients with autoimmune diabetes.
