Overview

Umbilical Cord Blood Endothelial Progenitor Cells (UCB-EPCs) are a cell-based therapeutic modality currently under preclinical investigation. These cells are typically characterized by the expression of the CD133 marker and are isolated from the mononuclear cell fraction of human umbilical cord blood. In research models of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI), UCB-EPCs have demonstrated the ability to modulate neuroinflammatory responses, reduce brain tissue damage, preserve the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, and improve functional behavioral outcomes. While they represent a promising biologic approach for neuroprotection and vascular repair, they are currently utilized as experimental research tools rather than marketed pharmaceutical products.
