Overview
Umbilical cord blood eye drops are an investigational biologic ophthalmic preparation derived from umbilical cord blood (UCB). Developed by the Banc de Sang i Teixits (Blood and Tissue Bank of Catalonia), these drops are rich in bioactive components, including growth factors such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), neurotrophic factors, anti-inflammatory molecules, substance P, vitamin A, and fibronectin. The preparation is designed to support corneal epithelial renewal, promote tissue healing, and facilitate the reinnervation of the ocular surface. It has been primarily evaluated for the treatment of neurotrophic keratopathy (NK) and ulcerative keratitis. A multicenter Phase I/II clinical trial (NCT03084861) was conducted in Spain to compare the efficacy of these drops against conventional treatments, although the trial was terminated early due to low recruitment rather than safety concerns.
