Umbilical cord blood megakaryocyte progenitor cells is an investigational cell therapy consisting of progenitor cells derived from umbilical cord blood that are committed to the megakaryocyte lineage. Developed by the Institute of Transfusion Medicine at the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, this treatment is designed to address thrombocytopenia, a common side effect of radiotherapy and chemotherapy characterized by low platelet counts. By infusing these specialized progenitor cells, the therapy aims to bypass the early stages of hematopoiesis and provide a more immediate source of cells that can mature into platelets, thereby accelerating hematopoietic recovery and reducing the risk of bleeding complications in cancer patients.
