Umbilical Cord Blood Mononuclear Cells (UCB-MNCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by Anhui Provincial Hospital for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The therapy consists of a heterogeneous population of mononuclear cells, including hematopoietic stem cells and immune cells, isolated from human umbilical cord blood. In clinical studies, UCB-MNCs are administered via intravenous infusion as an adjuvant therapy to patients already receiving standard-of-care cholinesterase inhibitors such as donepezil, rivastigmine, or galantamine. The mechanism of action is hypothesized to involve immunomodulation, the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α), and the promotion of amyloid-beta and tau protein clearance, thereby potentially improving cognitive function and activities of daily living in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
