Umbilical cord blood platelet lysate (UCB-PL) is an allogeneic blood-derived biologic therapy produced by the concentration and subsequent lysis of platelets obtained from healthy donor umbilical cord blood. The lysis process, typically achieved through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, releases a potent array of bioactive molecules, including growth factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), alongside various anti-inflammatory cytokines. Formulated as an ophthalmic solution, UCB-PL is primarily investigated for the treatment of severe ocular surface disorders that are refractory to conventional therapies, such as persistent corneal ulcers, severe dry eye disease, and ocular manifestations of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). The therapy functions by stimulating corneal epithelial cell migration and proliferation while suppressing local inflammation, thereby facilitating rapid re-epithelialization and tissue repair.
