Overview

Umbilical cord blood platelet-rich plasma (CB-PRP) is a biologic product derived from the processed blood of human umbilical cords. It is prepared by centrifuging whole cord blood to concentrate platelets within the plasma fraction. CB-PRP contains high levels of growth factors (such as PDGF, bFGF, EGF, VEGF, TGFβ), cytokines, and other bioactive molecules including albumin and fibronectin. These components contribute to its regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties by promoting angiogenesis, cell proliferation and differentiation, tissue repair, and modulating immune responses. Compared to autologous PRP (A-PRP) from adult peripheral blood, CB-PRP typically has higher concentrations of growth factors and anti-inflammatory molecules[2][3][6][7]. CB-PRP is being investigated for use in regenerative medicine across multiple fields including orthopedics (e.g., osteoarthritis), dermatology (wound healing), neurology (spinal cord injury repair), ophthalmology (corneal ulcers/dry eye disease), obstetrics/gynecology (cesarean section wound healing), among others[2][6][7][8]. Its mechanism involves delivering trophic factors that stimulate local tissue regeneration when applied topically or injected into target tissues.
