Umbilical cord blood red blood cells (UCB-RBCs) are a cellular blood product harvested from the residual blood in the umbilical cord and placenta following childbirth. These cells are distinct from standard adult-derived red blood cells due to their high content of fetal hemoglobin (HbF), which has a significantly higher oxygen affinity than adult hemoglobin (HbA). This biological profile is hypothesized to be better suited for the physiological needs of neonates. UCB-RBCs are primarily developed and investigated as a transfusion source for premature infants, specifically those suffering from anemia of prematurity. By utilizing UCB-RBCs, clinicians aim to reduce the exposure of neonates to multiple adult donors and provide a cell type that more closely mimics the intrauterine environment, potentially improving neurodevelopmental outcomes and reducing transfusion-related complications.
