Overview

This investigational combination therapy consists of ex-vivo expanded umbilical cord blood-derived regulatory T cells (UCB-Tregs) and liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Developed by the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, the treatment is designed to address the underlying autoimmune pathology of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) and Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA). The UCB-Tregs are intended to reconstitute immune tolerance and protect pancreatic beta cells from autoimmune destruction by suppressing effector T-cell responses. Liraglutide is included to provide additional metabolic benefits, improve glycemic control, and potentially promote beta-cell preservation. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial (NCT03011021) in China.
