Umbilical cord blood stem cells, specifically human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) and mononuclear cells (UCB-MNCs), are being investigated by Taihe Hospital of Shiyan for the treatment of ischemic stroke and related cerebrovascular diseases. These cell therapies are designed to address the complex pathophysiology of cerebral infarction by providing neuroprotection and promoting tissue regeneration. The primary mechanism of action involves the paracrine secretion of various growth factors and cytokines, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which support neuronal survival, stimulate angiogenesis, and modulate the post-ischemic inflammatory response. Clinical trials at Taihe Hospital have explored the safety and efficacy of these cells when administered intravenously or intrathecally to patients in the acute or subacute phases of stroke.
