Overview

Umbilical cord blood stem cells are multipotent hematopoietic and mesenchymal progenitor cells isolated from the blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth. These stem cells can differentiate into various cell types, primarily all three major blood lineages (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets), but also have demonstrated potential to give rise to non-hematopoietic tissues such as bone, neural, and endothelial lineages under certain conditions. The primary mechanism of action is reconstitution of the hematopoietic system following transplantation in patients with malignancies or disorders affecting the bone marrow or immune system. Cord blood-derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) are also being explored for their immunomodulatory properties and regenerative potential in a range of diseases including autoimmune disorders and tissue injuries. Umbilical cord blood is collected at birth from consenting donors; it is processed and cryopreserved for future therapeutic use[1][2][3][5][6].
