Overview

This therapeutic protocol involves the transplantation of two units of T-cell depleted umbilical cord blood (UCB) in combination with the administration of Interleukin-2 (IL-2). Developed by the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota, the treatment is specifically evaluated for patients with refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The strategy aims to maximize the expansion and functional maturation of donor-derived natural killer (NK) cells in vivo. By providing IL-2 both during the activation of one UCB unit and as a post-transplant systemic therapy, the protocol seeks to enhance the graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect, particularly through the 'education' of NK cell progenitors contained within the UCB graft.
