Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell extracellular vesicles (UC-MSC-EVs) are a cell-free biologic therapy derived from the secretome of mesenchymal stromal cells harvested from umbilical cord tissue. These vesicles, which include exosomes and microvesicles, function as mediators of intercellular communication by delivering a cargo of bioactive molecules such as proteins, lipids, and various RNA species (including miRNAs) to recipient cells. In the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, UC-MSC-EVs are administered via intra-articular injection to leverage their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. They are designed to suppress synovial inflammation, inhibit chondrocyte apoptosis, and promote the synthesis of the extracellular matrix, thereby potentially reducing pain and slowing disease progression. The specific candidate SKEX-OA01 is currently undergoing clinical evaluation in Japan to assess its safety and short-term functional outcomes in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.
