Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell (UC-MSC) therapy is an advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) utilizing multipotent stromal cells isolated from human umbilical cord tissue, typically Wharton's jelly. These cells are characterized by low immunogenicity (lacking MHC class II and co-stimulatory molecules) and potent immunomodulatory capabilities. UC-MSCs exert their therapeutic effects through the secretion of paracrine factors, cytokines, and exosomes that suppress the proliferation of T cells, B cells, and natural killer (NK) cells while promoting the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs). This therapy is being investigated for a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), ulcerative colitis, and immune thrombocytopenia, as well as for tissue repair and regenerative medicine.
