Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) are a cell-based therapeutic being investigated by Joshua M. Hare and the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute at the University of Miami for the treatment of metabolic syndrome and associated chronic inflammation. These multipotent cells are harvested from umbilical cord tissue and administered via intravenous infusion. Their mechanism of action is primarily paracrine, involving the secretion of a broad array of immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory factors that mitigate the systemic 'inflammaging' and endothelial dysfunction characteristic of metabolic syndrome. In the Phase I/II CERES trial (NCT03362307), these cells are being evaluated for their safety and cytokine-suppressing efficacy, specifically comparing their performance against bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) in reducing pro-inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein and TNF-alpha.
