Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by the Affiliated Hospital to Academy of Military Medical Sciences for the treatment of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD). These multipotent stem cells possess significant immunomodulatory properties, including the ability to inhibit T-cell proliferation and modulate the activity of various immune cells such as B-cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and dendritic cells. By secreting anti-inflammatory cytokines and promoting a pro-tolerogenic environment, UC-MSCs aim to mitigate the life-threatening immune response seen in aGVHD following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy as an off-the-shelf treatment option.
