Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are a cell therapy product developed by the National Engineering Center of Cell Products for the treatment of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). These multipotent stem cells are isolated from the Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord and are characterized by their ability to differentiate into various cell types and their potent immunomodulatory properties. In the context of ACLF, UC-MSCs are administered to suppress the "cytokine storm" and systemic inflammation that drive liver failure, while simultaneously promoting hepatocyte regeneration and reducing fibrosis through the secretion of various trophic factors. This specific product is currently being evaluated in a Phase IIb/III seamless adaptive clinical trial to confirm its efficacy and safety in improving survival rates for patients with HBV-related ACLF.
