This investigational allogeneic cell therapy consists of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) being developed by Necmi Kadıoğlu Hospital for the treatment of biliary atresia in infants who have developed liver cirrhosis following a Kasai portoenterostomy. The therapy is administered via the hepatic artery in two doses, typically six months apart. UC-MSCs are hypothesized to exert therapeutic effects through their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties, which help to reduce liver fibrosis and promote hepatic regeneration. The primary goal of this treatment is to preserve or improve liver function in pediatric patients, potentially delaying or eliminating the need for liver transplantation, which is currently the standard of care for end-stage biliary atresia.
