Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) developed by the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University for the treatment of refractory Crohn's disease. The therapy utilizes the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs, which function by inhibiting the proliferation of T lymphocytes and reprogramming macrophages toward an anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. These effects are mediated through the secretion of various paracrine factors, including prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase II/III clinical trials to determine its efficacy when combined with standard-of-care treatments (such as infliximab, azathioprine, and thalidomide) for patients who have failed conventional therapies.
