Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) developed by Trustem are an allogeneic cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of severe COVID-19. These cells possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which are hypothesized to mitigate the systemic hyperinflammation, often referred to as a cytokine storm, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. By secreting various paracrine factors and interacting directly with immune cells, UC-MSCs can modulate the activity of T-cells, B-cells, and macrophages, promoting a transition from a pro-inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory environment and supporting lung tissue repair. The therapy is administered via intravenous infusion to provide systemic immunomodulation.
