Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by Xijing Hospital for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly in patients with associated anemia or interstitial lung disease. These multipotent cells exhibit significant immunomodulatory properties, including the ability to inhibit the proliferation and activation of pro-inflammatory T cells and B cells, while promoting the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs). The therapeutic effect is mediated through the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-10 (IL-10) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), as well as enzymes like indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). By modulating the systemic immune response and reducing the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, UC-MSCs aim to restore immune homeostasis, reduce joint inflammation, and improve clinical outcomes in RA patients who may not respond adequately to conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
