Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) are a type of multipotent cell therapy being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial led by ShiCang Yu for the treatment of poor graft function (PGF) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). PGF is a severe complication where the transplanted stem cells fail to produce adequate blood counts despite successful engraftment. UC-MSCs are thought to function by modulating the bone marrow's hematopoietic microenvironment through the secretion of various cytokines. This paracrine activity promotes the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells, supports hematopoiesis, and encourages vascular regeneration in damaged bone marrow tissues. The clinical protocol involves weekly intravenous injections of 1×10^6 cells/kg for four consecutive weeks.
