Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) are an allogeneic cell therapy developed by the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) for the treatment of COVID-19-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). These cells are administered intravenously and exert potent immunomodulatory effects intended to mitigate the hyper-inflammatory response and immune dysregulation (cytokine storm) characteristic of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. In clinical studies (the CIRCA-19 trial), the therapy has shown potential in normalizing lymphopenia and improving clinical outcomes such as oxygen-free days and survival. The product is typically formulated as a suspension of freshly cultured cells in a vehicle such as PlasmaLyte A containing human albumin.
