umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) + corticosteroids** is a therapeutic combination used primarily for immune-mediated and inflammatory diseases where standard corticosteroid therapy is either insufficient or contraindicated. UC-MSCs are multipotent stromal cells isolated from the umbilical cord (usually Wharton’s jelly) with robust immunomodulatory, regenerative, and anti-inflammatory properties. When used together, corticosteroids provide rapid broad-spectrum immunosuppression, while UC-MSCs modulate long-term immune responses, inhibit autoreactive T and B cell activity, promote regulatory T cells, and may reduce corticosteroid requirements and associated side effects. This combination has been studied in steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (SR-aGVHD) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and reported in case studies for severe autoimmune diseases such as pemphigus foliaceus. UC-MSCs act partly via secretion of immunoregulatory cytokines, promotion of tissue repair, and support of immune homeostasis.
