Umbilical cord lining stem cells (ULSCs) are a specific population of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from the sub-epithelial lining of the umbilical cord. These cells are distinct from Wharton's jelly-derived MSCs and are noted for their high expansion potential and potent immunomodulatory properties. ULSCs function primarily through the secretion of paracrine factors, including anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors, which help to resolve systemic inflammation and stabilize vascular endothelium. They are currently being investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) associated with COVID-19 and for preventing angiodysplastic bleeding in patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs).
