Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (hUC-MSC) exosome gel is a topical biologic therapy being investigated for the treatment of vitiligo. Developed by the Third Hospital of Hangzhou, this formulation utilizes exosomes—extracellular vesicles secreted by mesenchymal stem cells—which contain a variety of bioactive proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. These exosomes are hypothesized to promote melanocyte regeneration and modulate the localized immune response to halt the progression of vitiligo and induce repigmentation. In clinical studies, the gel is being compared against topical ruxolitinib cream, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, to evaluate its efficacy and safety in adult patients.
