Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (UC-MSC) transplantation is an investigational allogenic cell therapy being developed by Indonesia University (Universitas Indonesia) for the treatment of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The therapy involves the intracoronary administration of approximately 50 million UC-MSCs, typically delivered 10-15 days following a primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). UC-MSCs are multipotent stem cells characterized by their significant immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and pro-angiogenic properties. In the context of acute myocardial infarction, these cells are intended to reduce the size of the myocardial infarct, prevent adverse cardiac remodeling, and improve overall cardiac function. The therapeutic effect is primarily mediated through paracrine signaling, where the transplanted cells secrete various growth factors and cytokines that promote tissue repair, stimulate angiogenesis, and inhibit cardiomyocyte apoptosis.
