Overview

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs or UC-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells derived from the tissue of the human umbilical cord, particularly from Wharton’s Jelly. These allogeneic cell therapies are characterized by their ability to differentiate into various cell types including bone, cartilage, muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve, liver endothelium and myocardium. UCMSCs exhibit immunomodulatory properties by regulating T and B cell activity and suppressing inflammation. They have low immunogenicity due to expression of MHC-I but not MHC-II or costimulatory molecules. Their mechanisms include anti-inflammatory effects and promotion of tissue repair through paracrine signaling and direct differentiation. Clinically investigated for regenerative medicine applications such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), frailty in aging populations, severe COVID-19 pneumonia/ARDS, systemic sclerosis (SSc), orthopedic conditions and other autoimmune or degenerative diseases[2][3][5][6]. They are considered safer than embryonic stem cells due to non-tumorigenic potential and lack of ethical controversy[2].
