Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from umbilical cord tissue, currently being evaluated by Indonesia University for the treatment of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). These cells are administered via intracoronary injection approximately 10-15 days after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The therapeutic mechanism is primarily paracrine, involving the secretion of various cytokines and growth factors that promote angiogenesis, exert anti-inflammatory effects, and reduce cardiomyocyte apoptosis. The clinical objective is to reduce myocardial infarct size, reverse adverse ventricular remodeling, and prevent the progression to heart failure.
