Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is an investigational allogeneic cell therapy consisting of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) developed by researchers at Universitas Indonesia. It is intended for the treatment of critically ill COVID-19 patients, particularly those suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and cytokine storms. The therapy works through immunomodulation, influencing pro-inflammatory T-helper cells to shift toward an anti-inflammatory state and reducing the levels of systemic inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Clinical data from a double-blind, multicenter randomized controlled trial in Indonesia indicated that the administration of these cells as an adjuvant therapy significantly improved survival rates in the ICU setting compared to standard care alone.
