Overview

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are a type of cell therapy being developed by Acibadem University for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a genetic disorder characterized by the absence of dystrophin, leading to progressive muscle degeneration. UC-MSCs are multipotent cells that can be harvested from umbilical cord tissue and are known for their low immunogenicity and high proliferative capacity. The therapeutic rationale involves the cells' ability to migrate to damaged muscle tissue, modulate the inflammatory response, and potentially differentiate into myogenic cells or transfer wild-type dystrophin genes to host cells, thereby improving muscle function and slowing disease progression.
