Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from human umbilical cord Wharton's jelly. Developed and studied by Yufang Shi at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the therapy is primarily targeted at patients with severe liver cirrhosis. The therapeutic effect is driven by the innate ability of MSCs to migrate to sites of injury, where they exert immunosuppressive effects and promote tissue regeneration through paracrine signaling. Clinical evaluation, notably in trial NCT01233102, has compared the efficacy of administration via hepatic artery infusion versus intravenous infusion, monitoring improvements in liver function parameters such as serum albumin, bilirubin levels, and Child-Pugh scores.
