Overview

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells derived from the Wharton's jelly of the human umbilical cord. This specific cell therapy candidate, developed by the Japanese biotechnology company CTEX (Cell Therapy EXpress), is currently in preclinical development. UC-MSCs are characterized by their high proliferative capacity, low immunogenicity, and potent immunomodulatory properties. They function primarily through paracrine signaling, secreting a wide array of anti-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors that suppress the activation of T cells, B cells, and natural killer cells while promoting the induction of regulatory T cells. CTEX focuses on the rapid and scalable manufacturing of these cells to address various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.
