This umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell (UC-MSC) therapy was developed by the General Hospital of Chinese Armed Police Forces for the treatment of liver cirrhosis. The therapy involves the isolation of mesenchymal stem cells from human umbilical cord tissue, which are then expanded in vitro (typically to passages 6-8) before transplantation. UC-MSCs possess significant self-renewal capacity and the potential to differentiate into multiple cell lineages, including hepatocyte-like cells. When administered to patients with liver cirrhosis, these cells migrate to the damaged liver tissue where they exert therapeutic effects through both direct differentiation and paracrine signaling. They secrete various growth factors and cytokines that modulate the immune response, inhibit the activation of hepatic stellate cells, and promote the regeneration of functional hepatocytes, thereby reducing liver fibrosis and improving overall liver function.
