Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) developed by the National Engineering Center of Cell Products are an allogeneic cell therapy being investigated for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). These cells are derived from human umbilical cord tissue and are administered via intravenous injection. The therapeutic rationale is based on the cells' ability to home to ischemic brain tissue and release a variety of paracrine factors, including neurotrophic factors (such as BDNF and NGF) and angiogenic factors (such as VEGF), which promote neuroprotection, reduce neuroinflammation, and stimulate endogenous tissue repair. The product is currently being evaluated in the Phase 1 UMERIS clinical trial to assess safety, tolerability, and preliminary efficacy in patients within the acute window of stroke.
