Overview

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) developed by Southeast University are an allogeneic cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). These multipotent stem cells possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which are hypothesized to mitigate the 'cytokine storm' and lung tissue injury characteristic of ARDS. Upon intravenous administration, these cells tend to sequester in the pulmonary microvasculature, where they can secrete paracrine factors that promote alveolar epithelial and endothelial repair, enhance alveolar fluid clearance, and shift the immune response from a pro-inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory state.
