This experimental cell therapy consists of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) isolated from Wharton's jelly. Developed by Fu-Sheng Wang and colleagues at the Fifth Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital, it is specifically investigated for HIV-infected immune non-responders (INRs)—patients who fail to achieve sufficient CD4+ T cell recovery despite effective viral suppression through antiretroviral therapy (ART). The therapy functions by modulating the host's immune response and suppressing chronic inflammation and aberrant immune activation, which are key drivers of T cell depletion in chronic HIV infection. Results from a Phase 2 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT01213186) indicated that intravenous administration of these MSCs is safe and leads to a significant increase in CD4+ T cell counts, suggesting a potential role in immune reconstitution for this patient population.
