Overview

Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) is an investigational cell therapy being developed by The Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University for the treatment of bronchopleural fistula (BF). BF is a severe complication that can occur after pulmonary resection, characterized by an abnormal passage between the bronchial tree and the pleural space. This therapy involves the local administration of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human umbilical cord tissue via endoscopic injection directly into the fistula site. UC-MSCs are utilized for their innate regenerative, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are hypothesized to promote tissue repair and facilitate the closure of the fistula. The approach is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial to assess its safety and preliminary efficacy.
